NAPA takes Angoon into OT

Replacement players led by Drazkowski's 17 points nearly upsets Angoon team

A Juneau NAPA team made of replacement players took Angoon into overtime Tuesday in the C Bracket of the Gold Medal Tournament.

Angoon players got a lift from their cheering fans and earned an 87-83 victory to keep their tournament hopes alive. Although the game was in Juneau, the loud fans made it sound like a home game in Angoon.

Juneau NAPA lost their second consecutive game and was eliminated from the tournament. Juneau NAPA wasn't listed in the Gold Medal bracket and was filling in for a Klawock Totem team. Juneau NAPA's Jerry Arca said they were asked to play when Klawock couldn't make the tournament.

With less then a minute to play in overtime, Angoon's Frank Jack sunk four consecutive free throws to clinch the win for Angoon. Jack and his teammates were helped by a crowd of Angoon supporters chanting, "Defense, defense" and "Let's go Angoon," as the two teams battled back and forth.

What started out slow turned into an overtime thriller.

Angoon led most of the first half, but Juneau NAPA battled back and managed to go up by two points at the half. Dave Campbell scored 10 points and Tom Hughes scored nine points to lead Juneau NAPA in the first half. Jack had the hot shooting hand for Angoon, connecting on four three-pointers in the first half. He led all scorers with 25 points.

In the second half, the teams traded baskets - and the lead. As the game went on the Angoon crowd got louder and louder, urging their players on to victory. Angoon responded by going up three points with less than a minute to play.

However, Angoon turned the ball over and NAPA's Doug Drazkowski drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 76 to force overtime. Drazowski had missed all of his prior three pointers on the night, but didn't hesitate to take the crucial shot of the night. He led NAPA with 17 points for the game, with Tom Hughes chipping in 15 and Chris Levale adding 14 points.
