Anchorage city utility sends wind power proposal

Posted: Friday, March 25, 2011

ANCHORAGE — The electricity utility for the city of Anchorage may be buying some power from a proposed wind farm on Fire Island.

The Anchorage Daily News reports Anchorage Municipal Light and Power has sent a proposal to Cook Inlet Region Inc. which is behind the project on the island off Anchorage. Details of that proposal have not been forthcoming from the company.

Cook Inlet Region also has been discussing a power purchase agreement with the Chugach Electric Association, also based in Anchorage. So far, no purchase agreements have been completed.

Spokesman Jim Jager says the first phase of the wind farm could power about 12,000 households.
