Sitka Tribe rolls over Hoonah; HoopTime girls also advance

Everybody on the Sitka Tribe roster scored at least four points, keeping their team undefeated in the girls middle school bracket of the Gold Medal Tournament with a 53-15 victory over the Hoonah Braves on Tuesday morning at Juneau-Douglas High School.

Sitka Tribe will play in Thursday's 9 a.m. winners' bracket final against the HoopTime 7th Graders, who beat Kake 27-3 on Tuesday. Sitka and HoopTime are guaranteed to finish no worse than third place in the tournament.

In boys action on Tuesday, the Hoonah Braves knocked off HoopTime 36-27 while Yakutat nearly doubled-up Dzantik'i Heeni, 39-20. Hoonah and Yakutat both advanced to the winners' bracket final at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, and they are also guaranteed a third-place-or-better finish in the tournament.

Larianne Wallace scored 12 points to lead Sitka Tribe to its victory over Hoonah, while Lela McArthur added nine points. Brooke Stockel, Emily Ann White and Caitlin Parrent scored six points each for Sitka.

Jessica Skaflestad led Hoonah with seven points, while Carissa Mills added five points for the Braves.

In the other girls game, Margaret Sekona and Amaza Whittington scored six points each to lead the HoopTime 7th Graders of Juneau. Nicole Fenumiai added five points for HoopTime.

Complete player names weren't available for the Kake team, which didn't score until the fourth quarter.

In boys action, D.J. Lindstrom scored 15 points to lead the Hoonah Braves over HoopTime of Juneau. Lyle Coutlee added five points for Hoonah.

Cameron Cook scored six points to lead HoopTime, while Kerry Kelly and Daryl Lew scored five points apiece.

Kyle Derek led Yakutat with 17 points as it beat Dzantik'i Heeni. Ryan Grove added 11 points for Yakutat, which led 27-2 at halftime.

Mike Wood led Dzantik'i Heeni with five points, while Yakutat's defense held Robert Beierly to just one point a day after he scored 27 points against Kake.

In today's losers' bracket boys games, Sitka Tribe plays Dzantik'i Heeni at 3:30 p.m. at JDHS, while Kake plays HoopTime at 8 p.m. at Marie Drake. The winners of today's two losers' bracket games will play each other at 8 a.m. on Thursday at JDHS.

In today's girls losers' bracket action, Dzantik'i Heeni played Kake at 8 a.m. and HoopTime B played the Hoonah Braves at 9 a.m. at JDHS. The winners of today's two losers' bracket games will play each other at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Marie Drake.
