Gold Medal roundup: Klukwan slips past Tlingit-Haida 75-71

Klukwan got 24 points from Joe Parnell in a 75-71 win over Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority in the Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament Legendary C Bracket on Sunday.

Terry Friske and Chris Wassman scored 14 points each, Scott Hotch added 11 points, and Guy Tompkins tallied eight points in the win.

For Tlingit-Haida, Art Chappell scored 24 points, and John Martin Sr. had 18 points in defeat.

Wallace Olds added 14 points, Jim Schotz scored six points, and Al Valentine had four points for Tlingit-Haida.

Metlakatla 91, Southeast Warriors 49

Metlakatla raced to a 48-20 halftime lead and coasted to a comfortable win over the Southeast Warriors.

Paul Bryant scored 21 points, and Trevan Walker added 20 points for Metlakatla. Frank Guthrie tallied 11 points, Gilbert Booth scored 10 points, Sean Enright had nine points, Steve Booth eight, Fred Blandov five, Stan Patterson four, and Marty Martinez scored three points in the win.

For Southeast, Ron Hanson and Brant Schmige scored eight points each, while Ray Kitka and Frank Cornell scored seven points each.

Hydaburg 108, Hoonah 91

Devin Edenshaw knocked down seven 3-pointers for a game-high 35 points as defending champion Hydaburg topped Hoonah in a first-round marquee match-up Sunday.

Sid Edenshaw tallied 21 points, George Peratrovich scored 18 points and Tony Peele added 17 points in victory. Charlie Frisby also had 10 points in the win while David Edenshaw shipped in seven points.

Hydaburg made 11 3-point shots in the win.

For Hoonah, Travis Dybdahl racked up 31 points and Mike Schneeberger had 20 points.

Albert Hinchman scored 11 and James Wilson had 10 in defeat.

Sitka 107, Kake 102, OT

Sitka and Kake treated Sunday's crowd to a thrilling first-round battle.

Sitka led 52-42 at the half before Kake came back to force overtime with the score 98-98.

In overtime, Sitka's Mike Spiegle scored five points and Casey Campbell hit 3 of 4 free throws to lift Sitka.

Campbell scored 29 points for Sitka while Matt Burrows added 21 points and Barry Morrison chipped in 16 points.

For Kake, Anthony Dolan led all players with 33 points. Brandon Jackson had 17 points, Mike Smith tallied 16 points and Scott Jackson scored 13 in defeat.


Kake 119, Angoon 84

Kake opened defense of its Legendary C Bracket title with a rout of Angoon on Sunday.

Rudy Bean scored a game-high 28 points for Kake. Bean was one of three Kake players to score 20 or more points.

Lloyd Davis had 23 points, Wayne Friday poured in 20 points, Jay Peterson added 18 points and Richard Austin tossed in 10 points in the victory.

Angoon's Kevin Mitchell led his side with 26 points. Ed Jack added 19 points and Jay Booth chipped in 12 points in the win.
