There will be two new champions crowned in the Class 2A state basketball tournaments this weekend, and the Yakutat girls and Angoon boys are hoping they will be state champions when the tournaments end Saturday at Anchorage's Service High School.
The Yakutat girls and Angoon boys both won the Region V-Class 2A titles in this weekend's tournament in Juneau.
The Klawock girls, who won last year's state title, didn't make it out of the Region V tournament, which makes for a wide-open field this year. Last year's defending state runner-up, Ninilchik, is the top returning team from last year's tourney.
The Yakutat girls, who replaced Klawock as Region V champs, will open the tournament at 1:30 p.m. Thursday against Unalakleet-Degnan. In other girls first-round games, Tri-Valley plays Seldovia at 11:55 a.m., Point Hope-Tikigaq plays Minto at 7:10 p.m. and Ninilchik plays Kake at 8:45 p.m. The girls Class 2A semifinals are at 4 p.m. and 5:35 p.m. on Friday, with the championship game at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
With the Cook Inlet Academy boys also not making it out of regions, the Class 2A boys tournament will be wide open. The tournament opens with Tri-Valley against Bristol Bay at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, followed by Angoon vs. Nulato-Demoski at 10:20 a.m., Tanana-Sommer vs. Minto at 4 p.m. and Seldovia vs. Kake at 5:35 p.m. The boys semifinals are at 7:10 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Friday, with the championship game at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday.
The Class 1A state tournaments will be held this weekend at East Anchorage High School, with the championship games being held at Service with the Class 2A title games.
