Old Timers still on top in C Bracket

Posted: Monday, March 27, 2000

Defending Legendary C Bracket champion Hoonah looked like its old self Sunday in the opening day of the Gold Medal Basketball Tournament.

The Old Totems, featuring a core of players who've been together for two decades, overwhelmed Juneau First National Bank 101-85 on Sunday.

With the kind of play that can only come with time spent together on the court, Hoonah jumped out to a 55-43 halftime lead and never let up.

``The core of us have played together for 20 years,'' said Bill Hutton, who led the Old Totems with 29 points. ``But we only really play together during Gold Medal.''

If that's true it didn't show on the court, as the Old Totems' slick passing and timely screens led to easy lay ups and wide-open jump shots.

Juneau's Steve Bradner, who matched up with Hutton most of the game, scored a game-high 36 points. Jerry Mackie added 15 points, Ken Rhea 12 and Brett Schmiege 11.
