Keep the mix of local, state, national opinion

Letter to the editor

Posted: Tuesday, March 27, 2007

A letter to the editor on March 8 expressing no interest in Empire editorials from out-of-town newspapers is off base, in my opinion. Occasional editorials from other Alaska papers - such as the Anchorage Daily News, Fairbanks Daily New Miner and Sitka Sentinel - and out-of-state papers such as the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, are very appropriate when they address issues which are of local interest, as well as of state or national interest.

Sound off on the important issues at

The Empire shouldn't be expected to limit itself to strictly local issues. There are already several Juneau Empire outlets for local "volunteer columnists" such as My Turn, Living and Growing, Letters to the Editor and Benjamin Brown's column. Both Empire editorials and outside editorials can even appear on the same editorial page, as in the March 11h paper.

The Empire's mix of local, state and national editorials seems about right.
