Gold Medal roundup: Juneau women defeat Petersburg in first round

Juneau led 39-31 and rolled in the second half to advance in the Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Tournament women's bracket Monday by a final score of 75-55.

Tanya Nizich hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points for Juneau, while teammate Heather Clark added 21 points.

Jennifer Thomason led Petersburg with 16 points. Brittni Birchell had 13 points, and Mandie Whitethorn tallied nine points in defeat.


Haines Merchants 93, Angoon 80

Five members of Haines Merchants scored in double figures in a 13-point win over Angoon.

Will Egolf led the Merchants with 20 points, 14 of which came after halftime.

Ben Egolf had 17 points, while Stewart DeWitt and Brian Friske tallied 15 points each. Andrew Friske tallied 10 points in the win.

For Angoon, Curtis Lane scored a game-high 28 points with six 3-pointers. Clayton Edwin had 17 points, Walter Kookesh added 11 points and Levi Johnson poured in 10 points in defeat.


Juneau Green Team 85, Yakutat 50

Juneau outscored Yakutat 34-16 in the first half and held on for the win.

Kevin Casperson led all scorers with 22 points, while Ethan Billings tallied 14 points, and Steve Brandner had 12 points.

Greg Indreland and Jon Jensen led Yakutat with 19 points each. Roger Williams added seven points in defeat.



Hydaburg 120, Sitka 100

Hydaburg and Sitka gave fans an impressive offensive performance in Monday's Mighty B battle.

George Peratrovich scored a game-high 24 points with five 3-pointers to lead defending champion Hydaburg.

Devin Edenshaw had 22 points, Sid Edenshaw tallied 21 points, Tony Peele scored 17 points and David Edenshaw contributed 10 points in the win.

For Sitka, Matt Burrows poured in 22 points and Paul Carrington added 21 in defeat.

Barry Morrison had 18 points, Rich Didrickson tallied 17 points and Tom Gamble scored 15 points for Hydaburg.


Kake 94, Juneau Delta 69

Rudy Bean poured in 32 points to keep Kake perfect in the Legendary C bracket.

Lloyd Davis added 20 points, Wayne Friday tallied 18 and Kip Howard contributed 15 in the win.

Kake drained nine 3-pointers in the win.

Sean Joslyn scored 18 points to lead a balanced Juneau Delta attack. Jim Carson had 15 points, Al Tagaban had 13 points and Ongo Tupou had seven in defeat.
