Kake burns up Angoon

Mighty B Bracket wrap

Posted: Tuesday, March 28, 2000

A deep and experienced Kake Tlingit Heat team ran Angoon ANB ragged in Gold Medal B bracket play Monday night.

The Heat, which features a core of players that have been together for most of 15 years, cruised past Angoon 102-75. The win advances Kake into a mighty showdown with perennial power Hoonah - 80-58 victors over Yakutat - at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

``Run'' was the operative word in Kake's victory. The Heat blazed up and down the court, garnering numerous steals which were quickly converted into fast-break buckets.

The Heat certainly had to be in shape to keep up such a scorching pace, but they were also chock full of hot players. When leading scorers Mike Smith (21 points) and Rudy Bean (14) took a break, other players stepped on the court and didn't miss a beat.

``We have a deep bench,'' Bean said. ``Every one of us has confidence in each other. You sit down one guy and the other can come in a kick some butt.''

Three other players reached double figures for Kake. Kip Howard tallied 18 points, Scott Jackson 15 and Lloyd Davis 10.

Early in the game Angoon looked like it might be able to run with the Heat. Interior defenders DeAndre King (14 points) and Frank Jack swatted several shots to help Angoon earn a 10-7 lead. But Kake then ripped off a 25-6 run capped by Bean's back-to-back steals for lay ups.

``We have our moments, but historically we start off slow,'' said Bean, who along with teammates Lloyd Davis, Nick Davis and Jay Peterson led Kake to the high school state championship in 1987. ``We always find ourselves digging out of a hole.''

Kake, which won the B bracket title in 1999, advances to play Hoonah on Thursday. The winner advances to the Saturday's championship. Hoonah has lost in the B bracket title game the last two years.

Angoon's Phil Dhetwiler scored 21 points to lead his team. Guy Hunter followed with 15, and David Johnson added 12. Angoon meets Haines at 5:30 today.

Bean and Kake manager Sam Jackson said the B bracket is up for grabs. Defending champion Haines looked dominating in a 114-81 defeat of Petersburg in consolation-bracket play Monday. And Hydaburg gave Kake a tough game in a 105-97 Heat win Sunday. Yakutat could be considered a darkhorse with its 110-109 defeat of Haines.

``This team, if they come to play, they have a very good chance of winning the title,'' Kake manager Sam Jackson said of his team. ``But all of the teams have a good chance. Haines is a good team. They're quick and they have the experience of winning the tournament last year. Hoonah's a very good team. Hydaburg has a very good chance.''

Hoonah 80, Yakutat 58

Led by four players who scored in double figures, Hoonah advanced to the B bracket semifinal with a 80-58 drubbing of Yakutat.

Kamel Lindoff led Hoonah's scoring output 23 points, while Travis Dybdahl and Andy Gray each chipped in 16. Albert Hinchman poured in 10 for Hoonah and Russell Dick had nine points.

Hoonah shot a scorching 95 percent from the free throw line (20-of-21).

Yakutat, which made waves in the B bracket with its 110-109 upset of defending champion Haines on Sunday, was down just 34-31 at halftime. But Yakutat couldn't keep pace with Hoonah in the second half.

Jimmi Jensen led Yakutat with 21 points, while Ralph Johnson added 17.

Haines 114, Petersburg 81

Haines came through the consolation bracket to win last year's B bracket championship, and with Monday's waxing of Petersburg, it looks capable of repeating that feat.

Three Haines' players reached the 20-point plateau. Link Fannon led with 29 points, brother Josh tallied 20 and Andrew Friske poured in 28.

Haines, known for it bombs-away mentality, canned 15 3-pointers in the game.

Klas Stolpe led Petersburg with 32 points and Garrett Bell came up with 22.

The loss eliminated Petersburg. Haines moves on to play Angoon at 1 p.m. today.
