Smart kids, not smart bombs

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." - Dwight David Eisenhower, April 16, 1953

During this shameful period in American history, I sit playing on the floor with my 22-month-old son and a toy frog. While my child joyfully hops and sings, my thoughts are heavy with the knowledge that at this very moment my country is killing beautiful, joyful and completely innocent children not at all unlike my son, or any of our children. I cannot imagine how a parent must feel to see their child blown to shreds in front of them. I doubt they would say they are being "liberated." I could only hope I was holding my child when the bombs hit, and that we both died quickly. Just add another couple figures to the body count of this vicious act of terrorism.

They call it "shock and awe," this dreadful plan to "shock," i.e. terrorize, the people of Iraq: and "awe," i.e. "Warning - no one on earth dare cross the U.S.A. Our technical power is omnipresent." A 9/11 every day, all for us to watch like a sporting match on TV. Let's all pat each other on the back and tell each other how great and free we feel here in John Ashcroft's America.

Each cruise missile blast we see, and are supposed to be so impressed by, is a million and a half dollars theft from our children, $75 billion for starters. And guess what, the Iraqi people aren't just letting us walk in and kill them, take their oil and occupy their homeland. Surprisingly enough they are attempting to defend themselves from this imperialist aggression. What will the actual costs of this war be?

Our "leaders" have chosen to build smart bombs instead of smart kids. U.S. militarism (and massive tax cuts for the rich) is leaving our children behind. Our out-of-control military spending is making decent, affordable health care for every American an impossibility. The arrogant, preemptive war mongering of the Bushmen has destroyed the global unity and good will this country enjoyed after 9/11. All squandered in a few short months, like the huge budget surpluses handed to W. when he "took" office. Each evening the nightly news is airing what amounts to recruiting films for the likes of Osama Bin Laden and his successors. God help us!
