GOLD MEDAL HALL OF FAME

Those players, coaches and volunteers inducted into the Gold Medal Hall of Fame before Saturday's C Bracket game. Players who have been in at least 10 Gold Medal tournaments may be considered, although the selection committee can give consideration to those with fewer than 10 years under special circumstances. Players are recognized for All-Tournament Selections, MVP or Sportsmanship honors. Players considered must have continued as a coach, team fund-raiser or spectator after their playing days are over. Being on a championship team also is a consideration. Bob Janes Sr. of the Juneau Lions Club, which sponsors the event, was honored as a worthy Lion.

Matt Wheeler, Yakutat - Wheeler, who played for Yakutat in this year's C Bracket, has played for just one community during 24 years of Gold Medal, having played in the A, B and C Brackets and making the all-tournament team in all three divisions. He has been on nine championship teams and reached the title game 14 times. He won the 2001 C Bracket sportsmanship trophy.

Stuart Mills, Hoonah - Mills, who played for the Huna Totem Old-Timers in Saturday's C championship game, has played in 32 Gold Medal tournaments, all for his hometown of Hoonah. He has been on 16 championship teams and has played in all three divisions. He was all-tournament four times in the B Bracket and four times in the C Bracket, winning the MVP award in 1995. Mills also won the all-tournament sportsmanship award in 1979.

Sam Jackson, Kake - Jackson, who played this year for Kake ANB in the C Bracket despite recent cancer treatments, has played in 20 Gold Medal tournaments both the B and C Brackets. He has played in six championship games, with his teams winning the title three times. He is a three-time B Bracket all-tournament selection and has been on the C Bracket all-tourney team twice. He won the B Bracket's sportsmanship award in 1987.
