NEW CALENDAR ITEMS

• Juneau-Douglas High School Dance Team dance clinic - The JDHS Dance Team will hold their annual dance clinic on Saturday, April 3, at the JDHS gym. Participants will learn a hip-hop routine. The format has changed this year - girls in kindergarten through second grade register at 7:45 a.m., and the clinic ends with a parent show from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Girls in third grade through high school and boys in fifth grade through high school register at 11:45 a.m., and the clinic ends with a parent show from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $30 - it include a clinic T-shirt, certificate and light snack - and registration is available only on the day of the clinic. • Juneau-Douglas High School Dance Team community show - The JDHS Dance Team will hold its season-ending community show on Thursday, April 8, at 7 p.m. at the JDHS gym. Tickets are $10 in advance at Hearthside Books or from a team member, or $12 at the door if any tickets remain; the show usually sells out. Friday-Sunday, March 26-28

• 2004 Herb Jaenicke Memorial Badminton Tournament - This tournament takes place Friday through Sunday, March 26-28, at the Mendenhall Valley location of JRC-The Racquet Club. The deadline to enter this tournament was Monday, March 22. This tournament is open to players of all skill levels. Entry fee includes a tournament t-shirt, game birdies, court time and prizes for the top two finishers in each division. Entry fees are $25 (plus tax for all fees) for JRC-The Alaska Club members, $30 for non-members and $15 for juniors (age younger than 13). • Southeast Road Runners Club - Glacier 10K and 1-mile runs - Registration takes place at 9:30 a.m. at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center parking lot and races start at 10 a.m. Support the Juneau-Douglas High School track and field team. Preregistration is available at either JRC/The Alaska Club location or at the Nugget Alaskan Outfitter. MEETINGS / CLINICS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Juneau Sports Association adult slow pitch softball registration - Team registration takes place on Tuesday, March 30, at the Travelodge Hotel Meeting Room. Registration for coed division teams is at 6 p.m. and for men's and women's teams is at 7:30 p.m. Team registration papers are available on the JSA Web site, http://www.jsaweb.org. • "You Go Girl" snowboard day for women - Eaglecrest Ski Area will host a day of activities for women snowboarders of all abilities on Saturday, April 3. The all-day workshop, including lunch, costs $50. Info: Eaglecrest Ski Area, 790-2001.

• Juneau Parks and Recreation - sports field reservations - Juneau Parks and Rec will begin accepting summer sports field reservations for Dimond and Savikko Parks on Monday, April 5. Fields are available for use starting April 9 and continuing through the summer. Cost is $16 per hour plus tax, and goes down as hours of use increase. Reservations must be made in person at the Parks and Rec office at City Hall between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Info: Juneau Parks and Recreation, 586-5226.

• Juneau 4-H Spring Running Club - This program is for runners in grades 1-5, with a separate club for runners in grades 6-8. There will be a registration meeting at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, at the Twin Lakes covered picnic area. Bring a water bottle and be dressed to run. The club meets at 5:30 p.m. every Thursday at various locations around town through the spring and summer, at least through the Douglas Two-Mile run on July 4. If you can't attend the first meeting, please contact the University of Alaska Extension Office to register. Local runners John and Jamie Bursell lead the group for grades 1-5, while Craig Farrington leads the middle school group. Parents are encouraged to run with their kids. OPEN GYMS / SCRIMMAGES / ONGOING

• Adult volleyball/basketball open gyms - Meet from 7-9 p.m. on Fridays and from 7-9 p.m. on Sundays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Cost is $4 and open gym is limited to adults (age 18-older) only. Info: Community Schools, 463-1700, Ext. 325.

• Treadwell Arena programs - The ice arena is open seven days a week with a variety of public open skates, youth open skates, pond hockey and rental times available (see Treadwell Arena Web site for details). The rink is closed for ice maintenance from 7:45-10:45 a.m. on Mondays and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fees for open skates are $4 adults, $3 youths (age 17-younger) and $2 seniors (age 65-older). Fees for pond hockey are $5 adults, $4 youths and $3 seniors. Skate rental is $2 for adults and youths, and $1.90 for seniors. Passes are available for open skates, pond hockey and skate rental. Facility rental is $150 an hour. • Eaglecrest Ski Area nordic ski lessons - Nordic ski lessons are available through the Eaglecrest Ski and Snowboard School. A 2-hour learn-to-classic-ski lesson or a learn-to-skate-ski lesson costs $17 each, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced clinics cost $20. Learn-to-Telemark-ski lessons are $17 and include and all-day surface lift ticket, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced classes cost $20. During the month of February, the Telemark series takes place from 1-4 p.m. on Sundays and costs $30 or $48 with a lift ticket. Info: Eaglecrest Ski and Snowboard School, 790-2001.

• Adult indoor soccer open gyms - Sessions are held from 7-9 p.m. on Sundays and most Fridays at Floyd Dryden Middle School. Check http://www.juneausoccer.com for updated schedules. Open to players 18 and older; cost is $5 per session. Contact: Pat Race, 586-3440.

• Gastineau Channel Little League baseball open gyms - GCLL baseball open gyms for kids ages 8-12 will be held at Auke Bay School from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sundays beginning Feb. 21. Bring tennis shoes and a baseball mitt. Info: Lisa Baker, 789-4486.

• Juneau Nordic Ski Club - The latest ski reports for local nordic skiers can be found on the club's Web site, http://home.gci.net/~jnordski.
