There is little love in Bible-based bigotry

Letter to the editor

Intolerant religion has certainly been rearing its ugly head lately. On Monday we had Mike Shakespeare's rant. Shakespeare has apparently inherited little of his famous namesake's humanity. But, then, I'm sure he wouldn't want to be associated in any way with humanism. He is, after all, of the fundamentalist ilk. He urged us to "dig out your Bible" for instruction. I urge him to try Webster's. Check out the root of "fundamentalist." Shakespeare will find himself well described.

Sound off on the important issues at

By the way, how many sheep has he sacrificed lately? Leviticus 5: "If a soul commits a trespass, and sins through ignorance ... then he shall bring for his trespass unto the Lord a ram without blemish ... for a trespass offering." What, he's never sacrificed a ram? Ah, to have lived an entirely sin-free life. Must be wonderful.

Then comes Jim Miller's letter, in which he casually labels as Hitlerian those who denounce religiously justified intolerance. Is Miller really so ignorant as to have forgotten that it was the Nazis who murdered homosexuals by the hundreds of thousands, along with millions of Jews, gypsies and political dissidents? It is always a cheap shot to label those you oppose as Hitlerian, but it's doubly cheap to use that label against those advocating tolerance, which is the antithesis if Nazism. Miller has the utter arrogance to talk about his "love" that will not allow him to stop harping at homosexuals. To paraphrase from that other, better Shakespeare, Miller "doth protest too much." There is precious little love in the sentiments he betrays.

Enough with the Bible-based bigotry, already.
