Host families needed for exchange students

Posted: Friday, March 28, 2008

JUNEAU - Volunteers with the American Field Service in Juneau are looking for host families for three students who have applied for exchange in the United States during the 2008-2009 school year. Students currently available for next year's exchange come from a variety of countries, including Norway, Finland, Belgium, Japan, Brazil, Italy, Germany and Thailand.

Exchange students will arrive in Juneau in mid-August and will stay through late-June 2009. There is no stipend; however, health insurance is provided through AFS. The Internal Revenue Service offers a modest tax deduction and, in the past, the community of Juneau has been generous in its support.

AFS is also looking for liaisons. Each student has a liaison, someone in the community who has contact with both the student and the host family at least once a month. The liaison also files a simple monthly report online or by email with AFS to be sure things are going okay for the student and family.

For more information, contact Luann McVey at 364-2928 or luannm@gci.net.
