Skagway resident Violet "Connie" Conard died March 25, 2008, at the Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence, Kan. She was 83.
She was born on April 27, 1924, in Coolidge, Kan., to Joseph Harvey and Jessie May (Shanstrom) Conard. She grew up in western Kansas, lived for most of her life in Alaska and moved from Skagway to Lawrence in February 2008.
She received her Bachelor of Education at Kansas University. While at the university, she lived at Watkins Scholarship Hall.
She taught high school for more than 40 years, starting in Springfield, Mo., and finishing in Skagway. She taught math, English and history, and coached high school women's softball.
She also was inducted into the Alaska Women's Bowlers Hall of Fame and named Alaska Volunteer of the Year in 2001.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Glen, Dean, Don and John Conard; and sister, Jessie May Klahr.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law.
Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Monday, March 31, at First Presbyterian Church in Skagway.
