SITKA — The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium S’¿xt’ H¿t Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Donna L. Smith, MD, as a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) and her husband Dr. Robert F. “Bob” Crochelt, MD, PhD, as a general surgeon.
Dr. Smith earned her medical doctorate degree from the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, and she completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (now known as the Drexel University College of Medicine). She completed her undergraduate coursework at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. Dr. Smith is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical fraternity.
After earning her medical degree and completing her residency, Dr. Smith was in private practice and worked at PeaceHealth Ketchikan General Hospital for 13 years. She then worked for three years at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins, W.V. During 2010, Dr. Smith worked as a locums (visiting) specialist in obstetrics and gynecology at S’¿xt’ H¿t Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital. She is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Smith’s medical interests include quality women’s health care, and her surgical interests included minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and endometrial ablations.
Originally from Nutley, N.J., Dr. Crochelt attended Columbia College in New York City where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, awarded magna cum laude (with high honors). After working in medical laboratories at Columbia and Downstate Medical Center, he eventually made his way to Phildelphia where he earned MD and PhD degrees in medicine and gastrointestinal pharmacology from Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Crochelt then migrated to California, where he completed a five-year surgical residency at the University of California at San Francisco.
Dr. Crochelt’s professional career has been spent in rural surgery in Minnesota, Ketchikan and West Virginia. He is excited to return to Alaska and is very excited about joining the Native health system at SEARHC. His professional interests include biliary surgery, trauma systems and patient care, pacemakers and endoscopy.
Dr. Crochelt has been board-certified in general surgery since 1995, and recertified in 2004. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Society of Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract, the Alaska State Medical Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor fraternity. He also is a member of the executive council of the Nafziger Surgical Society. Dr. Crochelt has been elected Chief of Staff in Ketchikan, and Chief of Surgery at White Community Hospital in Aurora, Minn., and Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins, W.V.
