First place winner of the Master Gardener Association category of the Juneau-Douglas Science Fair Melissa Axmann poses on March 17 in front of her project at Juneau-Douglas High School with Master Gardener and science fair judge Kristine Trott. Axmann, who won $100, studied the size of Knotweed roots (Polygonum cuspidatum) in order to see how much effort it would take to successfully get rid of Juneau's invasive Knotweed. Second place went to Hannah Stauffer and Nicole Rolden, and third place went to Dawson Walker. Active Master Gardeners assisting as judges, mentors or Scientific Review Committee members were David Bruce, Ed Buyarski, Pat Harris, Richard Heffern, David Lendrum, Robert Tonkin and Kristine Trott.
