Robert Schaefer

Former Juneau resident Robert L. Schaefer died March 22, 2008, in Ilwaco, Wash., where he had resided the past six years. He was 67.

He was born Oct. 25, 1940, in Tacoma, Wash., to Gerald and Bernice Schaefer. When he was 6 years old, he moved with his family to Juneau. There he completed his education and soon learned the fishing trade from his stepfather.

He and Nancy Jacobson were married on Oct. 6, 1972, in Juneau.

He fished commercially in Alaska for 46 years. Tired of the cold winters, nine years ago, he moved to Westport, Wash. Family said he was proud to be a fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Schaefer, of Ilwaco; brothers, Gerald Schaefer, of Port Angeles, Wash., and Joseph Bowman, of Juneau; and sister, Shari Robert, of Bremerton, Wash.

At the request of his family, no formal service will be held. Cremation arrangements are by Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, in Long Beach. A guestbook is available on the Web at
