State Senate passes Web registration bill

JUNEAU - The state Senate passed a bill requiring convicted sex offenders to register their e-mail addresses, instant messaging addresses and any other Internet communication identifiers with the state.

All 20 senators voted in favor of the bill.

Sen. Bill Wielechowski, D-Anchorage, is its prime sponsor.

The state has a legal and moral obligation to prevent sex offenders from repeating their crimes, Wielechowski said.

At least three other states have similar laws and more than a dozen others are considering similar legislation.

The bill now goes to the House for consideration.
