JUNEAU - The Abreu Fellows - postgraduate musicians, including Juneau teacher Lorrie Heagy - are in the running for a $250,000 grant from Pepsi. They have applied as a group and will split the money between their nine programs, leaving $25,000 to fund a 2010-2011 Abreu Fellow.
The funds will buy instruments for students in Juneau, support teaching artists in Atlanta, strengthen an El Sistema (music education) network in Durham, N.C., and much more.
The grant is awarded based on votes, and Pepsi will give only two $250,000 grants this month. You may vote once a day in March at www.refresheverything.com/elsistema. So far, the Abreu Fellows are in 15th place.
