Corporate campaigning bill bound for Senate

Posted: Tuesday, March 30, 2010

JUNEAU - The Senate Finance Committee has passed legislation aimed at addressing corporate campaigning in Alaska.

The bill, which shores up financial disclosure requirements and creates disclaimer rules to identify who's behind corporate-funded political advertising, is now headed for the Senate floor.

The measure follows a January U.S. Supreme Court decision that protected certain union and corporate spending in political campaigns as free speech. It opened the way for corporations to independently spend their money urging people to vote for or against specific candidates. That kind of third-party spending had been banned outright in Alaska and other states.
