Kake makes B Bracket finale, again

Kaka Tlingit Heat beats Hoonah 103-84 Thursday

Posted: Friday, March 31, 2000

Kake Tlingit Heat advanced to the B bracket championship for the second time in three years with a 103-84 defeat of Hoonah Thursday night.

Kake used its ``bread and butter'' style of play - the fast break - to literally run away from Hoonah. Kake jumped out to 22-8 lead on steals and quick-passing rushes downcourt for lay ups. Hoonah pulled to within 35-21 about midway in the first half, but Kake then ripped off a 24-6 run to effectively decide the game before halftime.

``The fast break is our trademark,'' said Kake's Rudy Bean, who rang up 19 points. ``We usually don't have a set offense. That is our offense.''

Bean was one six Kake players to reach double figures in the game. Kip Howard tallied 25, Mike Smith 15 and Scott Jackson 15, Nick Davis 12 and Wayne Friday 10.

Travis Dybdahl led Hoonah with 26 points, while Russell Dick added 20 and Albert Hinchman poured in 16.

Hoonah meets Haines tonight at 9 p.m. with the winner meeting Kake in the title game Saturday. Haines pulled out a 102-101 victory over Hydaburg Thursday to advance.

Smith said this year's B bracket is up for grabs.

``All three teams are tough,'' Smith said. ``Any one of the three can come out on top.''

``Hoonah was missing three of its best players,'' said Kip Howard, referring to Showalter and Garvin Martin - who were left off the team due to elimination of the descendancy rule - and Nate Strong, who now plays at Montana State-Billings. ``But they'll regroup. They're an experienced team.''

Howard, a long-time player with Kake, said this is his last Gold Medal in the B bracket.

``I'm going to the old-timer's bracket next year,'' Howard said. ``But I'm looking forward to one last title.''

Haines 102, Hydaburg 101

Josh Fannon sunk two free throws with 16 seconds left to secure Haines' chances of repeating as B bracket champions.

Fannon's free throws came after Hydaburg's Syd Edendshaw pair of free throws make it 100-99 Haines. Hydaburg's Charlie Frisby tipped in a shot at the buzzer for the final score after two 3-point attempts rimmed out.

A key play occurred with about a minute to play and Haines leading 98-97. Haines' Jesse McGraw fed Link Fannon on a give-and-go for a score.

``I didn't even know he was going to throw it to me,'' Fannon said of the play. ``That was an intense game for less than the championship.''

Haines launched a ton of shots, but wasn't hitting.

``It'd be nice if we make a jumper,'' Josh Fannon said.

Edenshaw led all scorers with 42 points and was 17-of-23 from the free throw line. Edenshaw was 15of-17 until missing four straight free throws late in the game.

Doug Edenshaw scored 18 points for Hydaburg, Matt Carle Jr. added 17 points and Joe Young had 11.

Andrew Friske led Haines with 28 points, while Josh Fannon poured in 27. Link Fannon scored 20 and Stewart DeWitt added 16.
