Klukwan stays alive

Posted: Friday, March 31, 2000

The Klukwan Chilkats used a balanced scoring attack Thursday to stay alive in the Legendary C Bracket of the Gold Medal Basketball Tournament.

The Chilkats had five players finish in double-figure scoring as they claimed a 92-70 victory over the Klawock Totems in a losers' bracket game Thursday afternoon. With the victory, Klukwan advances to today's 5 p.m. losers' bracket final against Angoon ANS, with the winner of that game meeting the defending champion Hoonah Old-Timers in Saturday's 5 p.m. title game.

``It's hard to beat a team that has four or five players in double figures,'' said Klukwan's Jeff Kasler, who scored 20 points Thursday.

``We like to see good balance in our scoring,'' said Steve Fossman, who led Klukwan with 27 points.

Rich Calkins added 15 points for the Chilkats, while Rick Leader had 13 points and Greg Stigen scored 10.

Klukwan, which lost in last year's championship game against Hoonah, took a 53-36 lead at halftime, and coasted the rest of the way.

``I think we, for the first time in the tourney, started out well,'' Kasler said. ``We came out came out guns a-blazin'. We play Angoon tomorrow, and we can't wait. I think we got our worst games behind us, and we expect to play better.''

``We're shooting better from the outside now, and hopefully we'll peak at the end of the tournament,'' Fossman said. ``I think we ran the ball a little better today. I swear the bucket had a lid on it the first couple of games. You don't want to be in the losers' bracket, but we're getting some good practice time in it.''

Fossman also said Klukwan is looking forward to today's matchup against Angoon, especially since the Chilkats want a rematch with Hoonah. Not only did Hoonah beat Klukwan in last year's title game, but Hoonah beat Klukwan earlier in this year's tournament. Hoonah, the lone unbeaten C Bracket team in the tournament, has also beaten Angoon this year.

``Angoon's tough. They've got some good players,'' Fossman said. ``We'll have to play a tough man-to-man, and when we get a chance we'll have to get out and run. We have to do it.''

Klawock, which was eliminated from the tournament with the loss, was led by John Garvey's 25 points. Sam Peters scored 16 points and Scott Larson added nine.
