JUNEAU - The new Rainforest Trail will be off-limits to dogs starting May 1, according to the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

The city is implementing the change to protect wildlife and habitat, according Parks and Rec. The city trail, which is near Outer Point off of North Douglas Highway, opened in summer 2001.

The department also is considering making proposed spur trails in the Amalga-Eagle Beach area off limits to dogs when the trails open. The department will provide information about the change at a Parks and Recreation Committee meeting on Tuesday. No action is scheduled on the item.

In other work, the committee will consider moving a nine-hole disc golf course from Dimond Park to Aant'iyeik Park near the Auke Rec bypass road. Work on a new high school at Dimond Park is scheduled to start this summer.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Assembly Chambers at City Hall downtown.
