BOISE, Idaho - Republican congressional contender Vaughn Ward has won an endorsement from a former vice presidential nominee.

Ward won the backing Monday of Sarah Palin, the former governor and vice presidential candidate in 2008.

Palin posted the endorsement on her Facebook page, saying Ward shares the same commonsense conservative ideals she does.

Ward served as a campaign aide during Sen. John McCain's presidential bid two years ago. Palin was McCain's running mate.

Palin's backing comes two months before the GOP primary. Ward is one of five candidates vying for the nomination and right to take on freshman Democrat Walt in November to represent Idaho's 1st Congressional District.

Other contenders include state Rep. Raul Labrador, of Eagle, Michael Chadwick, of Post Falls, Harley Brown of Idaho City and Allan Salzberg, of Boise.
