Mount Edgecumbe wins a closely contested game

Lions come within a point in fourth quarter, but can't finish

Posted: Friday, April 01, 2005

With 1 minute, 38 seconds left on the clock in a deadlocked state basketball tournament game, Mount Edgecumbe guard Earl Alstrom found himself with the ball, his feet set beyond the 3-point arc and his coach yelling, "Hit that, Earl!"

Alstrom did just that, breaking the deadlock and helping lift the Braves to a 57-54 win over Anchorage Christian Schools on Thursday to open the state tournament at Anchorage's Sullivan Arena.

"My coach told me to shoot it, and I felt a lot of confidence," Alstrom said. "We needed it, so I'm glad I knocked it down."

The Mount Edgecumbe boys were the only Southeast-Class 3A school to win on the opening day of the state tournament. The Petersburg boys lost 62-45 to top-ranked West Valley; the Mount Edgecumbe girls let a lead slip away and lost 49-45 to Seward; and the Petersburg girls couldn't get their offense going and fell to Nikiski 49-19.

The Mount Edgecumbe boys (19-3 overall) advance to play Barrow (20-5 overall) in a semifinal game at 8:30 p.m. tonight. Barrow beat Eielson 64-59 on Thursday. For the rest of Thursday's Class 3A scores, look on the Web at www.asaa.org.

Mount Edgecumbe built an 18-14 lead over ACS after the first quarter Thursday, and stayed ahead for a 29-23 halftime lead. But the Lions started to chip away, and drew within a point - 39-38 - when Chet Dyson hit a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left in the third quarter. Mount Edgecumbe was ahead 41-40 entering the final period.

ACS pulled even with Mount Edgecumbe just 12 seconds into the fourth quarter when 6-foot-9 center Richard McNutt sank a free throw to tie the game at 41-all. The teams see-sawed back and forth until Alstrom hit his key 3-pointer to put the Braves up 53-50 - and they stayed ahead for good.

"The experience of being in some close games at regions paid off," Mount Edgecumbe coach Archie Young said. "The guys trusted in themselves and in each other."

Josh Thomas scored 19 points and Brandon Thomas added 12 for Mount Edgecumbe, which beat its next opponent, Barrow, during the regular season. Dyson scored 22 points to lead ACS (18-8 overall).

Heritage Christian boys 62,

Petersburg boys 45

The Petersburg boys got a first-hand look at why Heritage Christian has been the state's top-ranked Class 3A boys team all season, as four Eagles scored in double digits to beat the Vikings.

"They play well," Petersburg coach Rick Brock said of Heritage. "You pick your poison (on defense) - any one of them can hurt you."

Petersburg hung with Heritage through much of the first half, but fell behind 35-24 at halftime.

Sam Jensen scored 11 points and Matthew Short added 10 for Petersburg (18-8 overall). Jared Reando scored 16 points for Heritage Christian (24-1 overall).

Nikiski girls 49, Petersburg girls 19

Petersburg was never able to find its offense against perennial power Nikiski, and the Vikings fell behind 24-9 at halftime.

Callie Bell scored seven points to lead Petersburg (18-8 overall), which will play Barrow in a consolation game at 11:20 a.m. today.

Sara Herrin scored 16 points to lead Nikiski (22-3 overall).

Seward girls 49,

Mount Edgecumbe girls 45

Mount Edgecumbe held a five-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but scored just three points in the final period as Seward rallied for the win in Thursday's late game.

The Braves (21-3 overall) trailed 28-27 at halftime, but took a 42-37 edge entering the fourth quarter before letting the lead slip away.

Skeeter Atoruk scored 14 points and Kim Rychnovsky added 10 for Mount Edgecumbe, which will face Valdez in a consolation game at 1 p.m. today.

Lara Loomis scored 16 points to lead Seward (16-10 overall).
