On April 3 Alaskans will be asked whether they want to amend our Constitution to forbid granting employment benefits for same sex partners of any state, local or university government employee. Juneau Friends Meeting is deeply disturbed by this effort to legalize discrimination.

The core belief of Friends is that the spirit of God exists in every person. Because of this belief, Juneau Friends oppose this proposition. We recall Jesus' words in Matthew 25: "As you did it to one of these my brothers and sisters, you did it to me."

We find it contradictory and disturbing that a state in a country founded on equality and freedom should attempt to institutionalize discrimination, and we urge Friends and all Alaskans to vote against this anti-American, anti-Christian and anti-Quaker effort to discriminate against people because of whom they love.
