In Sunday's paper Mary Grose of New Zealand wrote a letter telling us how upset she was with Patrick McGonegal's March 26 letter. That was the one entitled "Supporting our troops like supporting LAPD." That letter upset me, too.
However, we're a big country made up of all kinds. I want to assure Mary that Mr. McGonegal is definitely out of touch with the majority of the people in the country. The latest poll that I saw today showed that 70 percent of Americans support the administration and our troops. I'm sure by reading that March 26 letter most of us concluded that Mr. McGonegal has to be one of those people that protests almost everything and never puts his neck on the line to defend anything.
I have also been reluctant to support this war because I hate to see some of our finest young people get hurt or killed. However, sometime you just have to draw the line. It should be clear to anyone who follows the news that Iraq, under Saddam Hussein, has been a sponsor of world terrorism.
Since the war has started I think the news media have done a good job at showing the world just how first rate the young people are who are serving in our military. I couldn't be prouder and I support them in what they are doing. I also can't say enough good things about Tony Blair, the British, the Australians and the other members of our coalition. God bless America and its allies.
