Favorite outdoor activity: Hiking and cross-country skiing. "From the far reaches of Gates of the Arctic and Noatak National Preserve to New York City's Central Park, I have been fortunate to work and play in some magnificent landscapes," Matsil said.

Work: Juneau Parks and Recreation director.

Training program: Father of twin 2-year-old girls. "It has been a perpetual and wonderful treadmill," Matsil said.

Inspiration: The Juneau work force.

Accomplishments: Environmental Protection Agency National Wetlands Award and Society for Ecological Restoration International Sperry Award.

Challenges: Balancing park programming, while meeting the needs of the community with limited funds, Matsil said.

Near death experiences: Close encounter with a moose in rut. "This occurred the autumn of 1982 while I was employed as the Aniakchak National Preserve's first Natural Resources Specialist Ranger while hiking a game trail," Matsil said.
