Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to recognize and thank some very special friends, our Juneau workplace partners. These are businesses, agencies and organizations that play a critical role in the success of our program because they allow their employees an hour a week during the workday to volunteer as Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Juneau schools.
We salute Tlingit and Haida Central Council, Wells Fargo, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, Alaska Electric Light and Power Company, University of Alaska Southeast Information Technology Services Department, Central Office of the Juneau School District, Coeur Alaska and the US Coast Guard 17th District for their tangible service to children, families and schools. Their desire to help Juneau students reach their potential through one-to-one friendship-based mentoring is community service at its finest.
Each of these workplaces has signed a formal agreement with Big Brothers Big Sisters to support school-based mentoring by encouraging and supporting their employees who choose to volunteer. Currently 30 workplace partner employees are volunteering as Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Juneau. Most are "Bigs" in our School Program, and some have chosen to be matched in our Community Program. Each of them is making a difference to a child.
Independent national research shows that professionally supported, one-to-one relationships between "Littles" and "Bigs" have direct, measurable and lasting impacts on the success of the "Littles." Children in the program are more likely to graduate from high school and less likely to be involved in violence or substance abuse.
The next time you do business with any of our partners, we hope you will say a BIG thanks for their commitment to making a difference in the lives of Juneau's children in a direct way.
