BILLINGS, Mont. - A Billings engineering firm that does mainly highway and other government projects has merged with an Alaska firm after the two companies talked about working on airport projects together.
The companies signed merger contracts Monday in Billings. No financial details were disclosed. Dowl Engineers is a subsidiary of NANA, an Alaska Native corporation whose work comes largely from government contracting, oil field services and the world's largest zinc mine, located in northwest Alaska.
Both companies have 200 employees, but work in different areas.
About 80 percent of HKM's business comes from government projects, such as highways, water and wastewater projects. About 40 percent of Dowl's clients are government projects with 35 percent commercial work.
The merged company has offices in Alaska, Arizona, Montana, Washington and Wyoming. Current staff will keep their jobs and people will be hired to open an office in Phoenix.
