Anchorage police urge trail users to beware

ANCHORAGE - Anchorage police are urging trail users to remain alert, "buddy up" and carry cell phones - and not just because of bears awakening from hibernation.

Police say a man approached two women Wednesday on the Rover's Run Trail in the Campbell Creek system. He chased one woman who escaped when he fell in the snow.

The second woman returned to her car when he approached her. She told a skier who saw the suspect beating on a tree. When police arrived they found a hatchet embedded in a tree, but no other sign of the suspect.
