ANCHORAGE - U.S. Rep. Don Young is again co-chairing a racing event next week in his home state of Alaska.
The Republican congressman is set to co-chair the 25th annual Arctic Man Ski and Sno Go Classic, scheduled to take place April 7-11. Young co-chaired the event last year as well.
His functions include addressing the competitors and crowning Miss Arctic Man.
Held near Summit Lake off the Richardson Highway, the Arctic Man's signature races feature snowmobiles pulling skiers or snowboarders. Contestants start atop a 5,800-foot summit and go 1,700 feet almost straight down.
Then they grab the towrope of a snowmobile that pulls them up a gully - sometimes at speeds of more than 85 mph - before they are sling-shotted off the top and down another hill for a 1,200-foot drop to the finish line.
