District should encourage free speech

Posted: Tuesday, April 03, 2007

It is clear to me that the Juneau School District is overstepping its bounds in the Bong Hits 4 Jesus case by not allowing Mr. Frederick to exercise his constitutional right: free speech. The young man or should I say, young adult, being as he was 18 at the time of the supposed offense, needs to be applauded for having the guts to freely speak.

Frederick's free speech would be welcome in any college. To me, being able to think and express oneself is what free speech really is. The JDHS administration should spend more time encouraging students to express their thoughts, as well as think for themselves on campus rather than policing public sidewalks, where I could've held up the same sign and not been punished at all.
