I am writing to you on the latest sales tax issues. How could businesses get so far behind on the sales tax?
We, the people, pay our sales tax when we enter any establishment and purchase food, gas and any retail service; so why doesn't that go into an account ready to pay the city?
Do the retailers think it is their money to keep? Wrong. It is not their money. It is a disgrace to our community and an embarrassment to we who go to those retailers and spend our money.
I worked for one of those businesses (identified in the newspaper for owing taxes) for 20 years and even brought it up to the owner about it being in the paper. She just shrugged it off and said, "Don't worry about it."
Well, to put it short, I no longer work there (with many other issues), because I need a stable employer I can work with, and not worry if the doors will be closed one morning when I come to work.
I will boycott all businesses on that list, and I hope the city will get on the ball and pursue all the businesses in arrears who are behind.
Shut them down until they pay their taxes.
Some of the companies are gone, but the ones still operating with a happy face need to get a grip on the money and pay their taxes that we already paid to them.
I now can go to work knowing the door will be open. She pays her taxes.
