JUNEAU - The Juneau-Douglas High School class of 1987 has created a scholarship, "Spirit of '87 Scholarship," aimed toward the students who obtain less-than-perfect grades but have the desire and drive to further their education beyond high school restrictions.
Kluane (Ivey) Baer, a JDHS alumnus, was preparing for her 20-year class reunion when she had the idea of beginning a legacy. In early 2007, in preparation for her reunion, Baer was in constant contact with other alumni from her graduating class. She pitched the idea to them right away. Her plan to give back to the students of today attracted support.
"I am very proud to be an alumni of the JDHS class of 1987 and be a part of this awesome opportunity for the young adults in Juneau," Baer said. "I want to thank everyone who is helping this become a reality."
The class of 1987's application is being processed to establish their nonprofit status, but they have set up a Web site, www.jdhsscholarship.org, for community use.
Scholarship applications were due April 1. For more information, visit www.jdhsscholarship.org or talk to Kimberly Pierce in the JDHS Career Center.
