On March 20, local Young Democrats raised nearly $2,200 for Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies Inc. The fundraiser was the 25th annual Sham Rock and Roll event at the Filipino Community Hall in downtown Juneau.
AWARE offers comprehensive intervention and prevention services in Juneau and nine rural communities in Northern Southeast Alaska, reaching to Elfin Cove, Gustavus, Haines, Klukwan, Hoonah, Pelican, Skagway, Tenakee Springs and Yakutat.
"I'm thrilled with the success of the Sham Rock and Roll," said Matt Moser, an organizer for the event. "We had excellent turnout, and exceeded our fundraising goals. It's wonderful that the funds are going to a worthy organization like AWARE."
The theme this year was "Juneau Shore," a parody of the MTV hit show, "Jersey Shore." Attendees sported fake tans, Ed Hardy T-shirts and incredibly lame dance moves, all in the name of raising dollars for an excellent cause.
AWARE is grateful and impressed by the extraordinary fundraising of the Young Democrats and by their commitment to our cause. Thanks to all who supported this fundraiser and who appreciate the fine work of AWARE. We couldn't do it without you!
