Local Cub, Boy Scouts to hold food drive

Posted: Sunday, April 05, 2009

JUNEAU - On Saturday, Juneau Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will participate in the Boy Scouts of America's "Good Turn" event known as the Scouting for Food Campaign, during which scouts will go door to door collecting nonperishable and canned food items.

The donated food will go to the Southeast Alaska Food Bank for distribution. In the week prior, Scouts distributed grocery bags with fliers describing Scouting for Food to homes around the city. Those wanting to contribute should fill the bags and leave them on their doorstep for pickup between 10 a.m. and noon Saturday.

Scouts from all over Juneau collected more than 6,000 pounds of food in last year's effort and hope to collect more this year. Last year, the Juneau food bank distributed more than 85 tons of food. If the Scouts are not able to get to your neighborhood, contributions may be dropped off before 2 p.m. Saturday or any weekday morning at the Southeast Alaska Food Bank, 10020 Crazy Horse Drive, past Don Abels.
