Pebble Fund awards $1 million in grants

ANCHORAGE - Almost $1 million in community grants are being awarded in Southwest Alaska near the Pebble copper-and-gold mine prospect.

The 32 grants are being awarded by the Pebble Fund, a joint venture of the two mining companies hoping to develop a mine - a prospect that has been opposed by commercial fishing interests in nearby Bristol Bay.

The Alaska Community Foundation is overseeing the grants.

The grants include money to expand an elder food bank for several communities including Naknek and King Salmon.

Funds also will buy elliptical cross trainers and treadmills for community use in those same communities.

The money also will help build a health clinic in Chignik Bay, train firefighters in Aleknagik and help build a community center in Egegik.
