I have followed the process of filling Kim Elton's senate seat from the beginning. It is clear that the process is supposed to be the Juneau Democrats coming up with the people they want and the Senate Democrats having the final say in who it is.
I don't think it was the intent of the law to have the governor disrupt the process by refusing the one selection Juneau Democrats forwarded to her.
Kim Elton's seat should have been filled immediately so that Juneau has representation in the Senate. The governor is not just denying Rep. Beth Kerttula, D-Juneau, the seat, but she is denying her own Republican supporters their right to a senator.
The voters who are registered as nonpartisan and undeclared are also denied representation. It is time for Gov. Sarah Palin to do the right thing, and select Kerttula to fill the seat.
I predict that in two years this will come back and bite her.
