Part of Herbert Glacier Trail will be closed

The Herbert Glacier Trail, past the 3.5-mile trail marker, will be closed to public use April 11 through 14. The first 3.5 miles will remain open.

Signs will be posted at the trailhead alerting hikers to the closure. Forest Service crews will be blasting at the rock cliff area to establish a trail above the changing course of the Herbert River.

State offers disaster assistance to victims

The Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is offering state disaster assistance to those who suffered damage or losses to their homes, personal property and transportation during the storm of Nov.18-26 that struck Juneau, Sitka, Haines, Skagway, Pelican and Hoonah.

The deadline is April 22.

To apply for state disaster assistance, call toll free at (800) 921-3682 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Disaster assistance is available without regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability or economic status.

National Day of Prayer set for May 4

The Evangelical Pastors Association is sponsoring a National Day of Prayer from noon to 1 p.m. on May 4.

The gathering will be on the steps of the state Capitol.

Juneau History Grant apps due by May 15

Applications for a 2006-2007 Juneau History Grant are due by 4 p.m. May 15. Students, teachers, organizations and individuals of all ages are encouraged to apply for up to $1,000 to assist them in the completion of a project that will document, preserve or improve access to the history of the greater Juneau area.

Applications are available at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum located at Fourth and Main streets, by phone at (907) 586-3572, or on the city museum's Web site at museum/.

All applicants will be notified as to the committee's decision by June 15. Funded projects are to be completed by May 2, 2007.
