While large majorities in the communities of Haines, Skagway and Juneau have made it quite clear they want no road, local political rookie, Bill Thomas, has decided his allegiance lies with the party majority rather than the communities he supposedly represents.
Teachers, explain that to your civics classes. Hopefully you will do better than Thomas' feeble attempt at explaining his timid act of cowardice. Thomas claimed this vote, "put him in a difficult spot." Indeed, it did, for it required backbone. One certainly wonders just who these nebulous constituents are whose burning desire for a road takes precedence over those directly affected.
Luckily Thomas was elected to a two-year seat. I suggest that, come next election, we give him the same kind of support he showed us.
