Charter school is a public school

Posted: Wednesday, April 08, 2009

We appreciate the Empire covering local education issues, but we'd like to make an important correction to how our school was described in Thursday's article about our proposed move to Marie Drake.

The Juneau Community Charter School is a public school. It is 100 percent free and open to all Juneau School District children. Yes, we have more freedom than individual neighborhood schools in developing curriculum and in deciding how to spend funds. We have different responsibilities, too, such as paying for our school space. Nonetheless, we must achieve the same standards as other district schools, and our students must take all district and statewide tests.

We welcome visitors to our school. We will have an open house for interested kindergarten and first-grade students and their parents from 2:15 to 4 p.m. today. We also will have a visitation day for any interested parents from 9:15 to 11 a.m. and 1:15 to 3 p.m. April 28. Both events will take place at our current location, 430 Fourth St. For more information, call 586-2526 or visit the Web site at
