Auguston's 2 goals spark opening win in women's double-elimination playoffs

Elise Auguston lifted Green to a 3-0 lead with a pair of second-period goals Monday and helped her team hang on for a 4-0 opening win over Les Schwab in the Juneau Adult Hockey Association's double-elimination Women's Tier playoffs.

Benthe Mertl opened the scoring for Green with an unassisted goal midway through the first period. Her score was all Green would need.

Auguston opened the lead, though, scoring off an assist from Jessie Kovach in the opening minutes of the second and tacking on another in the period's closing minutes. Debbie Hart assisted Auguston's second goal.

Leah Cazemier tacked on an insurance goal late in the third, getting assists from Hart and Amber Miller.

Green outshot Les Schwab just 18-17, but picked up a perfect effort in the net from Greg Cazemier. Wendy Wallers added 14 saves for Les Schwab.

Subway 2, Alaska Dames 0

Michelle Morris' pair of goals were all Subway needed to escape from Alaska Dames in Monday's second Women's Tier playoff opener.

Both of Morris' goals came during a one-minute span midway through the first period. Cathy Tide assisted on Morris' first goal, while Alena Craigova provided the helper one minute later.

Subway outshot Alaska Dames 22-20 and picked up a perfect effort from Rich Morris in the net.

SUNDAY

MEN'S TIER A

Island Pub 5, DocWater's 0

Dave Kovach led the way with a goal and a pair of assists as Island Pub dumped DocWater's to the bad side of the double-elimination playoffs.

Gernot Bucheli opened the scoring for Island Pub in the closing minutes of the first period, getting an assist from John Kajdan. Flip Pryor then pushed the lead to 2-0 in the opening minutes of the second period with an unassisted score.

Kovach netted his goal with just three minutes remaining in the second period, getting the helper from Pryor. Kovach then assisted on the next two goals to close out the scoring in the third period. Matt Boline was the first recipient of Kovach's passing, while Rich Morris found net off one of his helpers minutes later.

Island Pub outshot DocWater's 33-25, and picked up a perfect effort in goal from Thomas McKenzie. Steve Morrison added 28 saves for DocWater's.

Kensington 3, Green 0

Kensingon outshot Green 39-16, picked up a pair of goals from Matt Foss and breezed to the opening playoff win over Green.

Foss opened the scoring for Kensington in the final minutes of the second period, getting the helper from Hayden Hoke. Foss also closed the game's scoring on an unassisted goal with just 16 seconds remaining in the game.

Albert Svensson scored between Foss' goals, getting assists from Jim Delabruere and Foss.

Colin Osterhout added 36 saves for Green, but did not receive the offensive support he needed.

MEN'S TIER C

Purple 3, Green Pea Soup 1

Chad Dubois and Colby Shibler picked up a goal apiece in the third period Sunday, lifting Purple to an opening-round playoff win.

Matt Dubois lifted Purple to an early 1-0 lead, finding net off a Greg Cazemier assist in the first period. Stephen Morrison responded for Green just two minutes later, though, off an assist from Alan Schorr to knot the score.

Chad Dubois then lifted Purple ahead again with an unassisted netter midway through the third period. Shibler added his goal less than a minute later to close out the win. Sarah Bixby assisted Shibler.

Purple outshot Green 22-11 and picked up 10 saves from Jason McAdoo in the net. Mark Sebastian added 19 saves for Green.

Orange 5, Glacier Seafoods 1

Cameron Kunz and Bryan Zepp knocked in a pair of goals apiece to lift Orange past Glacier Seafoods Sunday.

Glacier actually took the early lead, going up 1-0 after Jason Hort found net off assists from Zach Jones and Jason Kohlhase midway through the first period. Orange bounced back in the period's closing seconds, though, when Rob Davidson scored off a Zepp assist.

Zepp and Kunz then alternated goals over the second and third periods, with Davidson assisting both of Kunz's goals and Zepp's game-closer.

Orange outshot Glacier just 26-24, but picked up 23 saves from Peter Sommers in the net. Jordan Curbow added 21 saves for Glacier.
