State seeks settlement in rural schools lawsuit

JUNEAU - Lawyers on both sides of a case between chronically underperforming rural school districts and the state say they're willing to consider a settlement.

Howard Trickey, representing school districts, and Neil Slotnick, representing the state, met with lawmakers Wednesday in a joint education committee meeting to discuss developments in Moore vs. Alaska. The case began in 2004.

Superior Court Judge Sharon Gleason last week said the state is failing to show it's making good on a court order to improve education in the districts.
