Stephanie Bailey Kitka, a junior at Juneau-Douglas High School, was selected for recognition by Juneau's Glacier Valley Rotary Club as Student of the Month for March 2003.

JDHS vice-principal Dale Staley said Bailey was recommended by Anna Wright and Heather Binkley, VISTA volunteers working with the Students for Social Responsibility and Mediation program at the high school.

"Bailey has exploded with enthusiasm and vision for the Students for Social Responsibility and Mediation and Conflict Diversity and Communication programs," Wright and Binkley reported. "She has taken a leading role in creating a more cohesive SSRM community. This next semester and summer Bailey will be organizing lunch meetings, service projects, potlucks and a summer retreat."

Kitka also works in the classroom as a student teacher for a sixth-period all-girls health class.

In the future, Kitka said she expects to take part in the new Conflict Diversity and Communication class and help make a difference with other students as the class did with her.

Glacier Valley Rotary presented Kitka with a certificate for outstanding achievement, and Alaska Pacific Bank presented Bailey with a U.S. Savings Bond.
