Shanklin named manager: USKH, an Alaska architectural, land surveying, planning and multidisciplinary engineering firm, said Zane W. Shanklin has been promoted to manager of the civil engineering department. Shanklin, who works in Anchorage, has clients in Juneau, where USKH also has an office. Shanklin has 20 years of experience in civil engineering.

Marrs joins railroad board: Carl Marrs, chief executive of Cook Inlet Region Inc., has been named to the Alaska Railroad Corp. board of directors by Gov. Tony Knowles.



In 1973 Marrs began his career with CIRI, an Anchorage-based Native corporation with 7,000 shareholders. He worked his way from land manager to president and CEO, a position he has held since 1995.

The Alaska railroad was purchased by the state from the federal government in 1985 for $22 million, and operates on 611 miles of track from Fairbanks to Seward. It carried more than 500,000 passengers and 6.2 million tons of freight last year and reported revenues of $94 million, according to the state.

Technician certified: Todd A. Grant, a computer technician with Kappler Computer Services, has successfully qualified as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.

MCSE responsibilities include installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network systems. The MCSE credential demonstrates the holder can design, implement and administer the most advanced Microsoft Windows platform and Microsoft server products, Kappler said.
