Title and firm: Jeff Hastings is vice president and general manager of Hotel Express Services, providing airport shuttle service to and from local hotels and bed-and-breakfasts, with plans to expand this service in the near future to include the ferry terminal.
Biographical information: Although he was born in Los Angeles, his father's home, Hastings' mother is from Juneau, and they returned here 25 years ago, when he was 7. After attending Juneau-Douglas High School and then the University of Alaska Southeast for two years, Hastings studied at Fort Lewis College in Colorado, majoring in business and tourism. He worked at a resort in Durango, Colo.
Seeing opportunity in Juneau, Hastings returned here in 1994, when he signed on with Alaska Native Tours until it was acquired by Goldbelt, which then offered Hastings a position as consultant for its ground transportation operations.
In 1998 Hastings opted to start his own business, and did so with Last Frontier Tours, which he sold a year later. He was approached by investors in a recently defunct local shuttle and tour service. When a deal was made to acquire their equipment, Hastings secured agreements with local hotels and formed what is now Hotel Express, providing shuttle service for their guests to and from Juneau Airport.
Family: Hastings' wife, Laura, is a paralegal with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. They have a son, Elias, 2, and are expecting another baby in May. Hastings' sister, Melissa, lives in Juneau, and his mother lives in San Diego, Calif.
Quotable: "Efficiency is the key to our operation. Our goal every day is to be more efficient."
Employees: Three at present; six to seven during the tourist season.
Contact information: The business is operated from his home at 415 W. Ninth St., but there are plans to acquire space at the airport before the summer season. Phone 463-6916. E-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
