JUNEAU - Young wrestlers from across Southeast Alaska will be in Juneau on Saturday for an invitational tourney hosted by the Juneau Tornadoes wrestling club.
The meet will be held at Riverbend Elementary School from 9 a.m. until about 5 p.m., and the entry fee of $1 will go to the club. Wrestlers from Juneau, Klawock, Sitka and possibly Wrangell are expected to participate.
While middle-school and high-school wrestlers will take part in some matches, Tornadoes coach Bob Mahon said he expects most of the field will be younger competitors - from age 5 through sixth grade.
Competitors will be split up in divisions based on age and weight.
"It's a warm-up tournament for the state tournament up north next month," he said. The state meet will be held May 2-3 in Eagle River.
The Tornadoes' season started on March 1, and the club saw a good turnout of about 60 wrestlers - including many young newcomers.
"We've had a tremendous turnout of little guys - and little girls - this year," Mahon said.
The season ends in May after the state tourney.
