Hood starts garage ballot initiative

Posted: Thursday, April 10, 2008

JUNEAU - A Juneau resident wants to give voters the chance to stop the downtown parking garage project.

Resident Dixie Hood testified at Tuesday night's Planning Commission meeting that she had initiated the process of creating a ballot initiative that would stop further funding for the project.

Hood filed a draft document on the purpose of the petition in the clerk's office Monday. It calls for more study of transit and traffic impacts, among other considerations.

The document also says the current project at Main Street and Egan Drive is inconsistent with the city's long-term plans and the public interest.

City Attorney John Hartle said his office is reviewing the document for consistency with rules on ballot initiatives.
